Many households rely on a mini-split AC to keep them cool and comfortable throughout the summer. During hot, humid weather, there’s little more frustrating than turning on your mini-split and getting no cool air at all. Let’s explore the top reasons this may be the case.
Remote Control Problems
The most common way to control a mini-split is with a remote control. While some newer systems use Wi-Fi for connectivity, many rely on old-fashioned infrared and require a clear line of sight. Make sure there’s nothing potentially interfering with the signal. Check the remote, and rule out operator error. Something as simple as having a mini-split heat pump in the wrong mode can cause it not to work. Rule out dead batteries by installing a fresh set. Try a different remote if you have an extra or an app on your phone that your system supports.
Power Issues
Verify whether your mini-split is getting power. There may have been a temporary power outage, or the system’s circuit breaker could have tripped. A mini-split’s circuit breaker may trip from time to time, but it shouldn’t do so often. If it’s tripped, you can reset it once, but you shouldn’t reset it repeatedly. The problem could be as simple as a worn circuit breaker that needs replacement, but there could be a much more serious electrical issue as well. Another potential issue is the disconnect switch, which is usually located outside the house near the condenser unit. Make sure the switch is present and firmly seated in the socket.
Clogged Filter
An airflow obstruction can be severe enough that your mini-split won’t turn on at all. Ideally, you should remove each indoor air handler’s filter every two weeks and clean it. If it’s been a while, it could be that the filter is clogged. Remove it, clean it, let it dry, and reinstall it.
Refrigerant Leak
Mini-splits have refrigerant lines that can rupture and cause a loss of refrigerant pressure. Often, a system will experience micro-leaks that will cause decreased performance, such as uneven cooling and high humidity. Eventually, these can lead to the evaporator coil freezing over and the system turning off and not being able to turn back on.
Component Failure or System Malfunction
Many components within a mini-split can become faulty and prevent an HVAC system from operating. The industry recommends seasonal tune-ups because they can help you avoid the most common issues, such as worn wires, loose connections, or bad capacitors. Faulty thermostats are a common culprit with mini-splits that won’t turn on. You may also have a bad sensor or a problem with the outdoor compressor pump.
