Fresh EV Charging Habits for the New Year

Consumer research shows that many new EV drivers aren’t confident that they’re maximizing their savings and fully protecting their vehicles. Let’s explore some key tips experts recommend to preserve EV batteries and lower charging costs.

Schedule Annual Inspections and Maintenance

At least once a month, look over your EV charger for damage and other issues. Dust it with a dry microfiber cloth, and if there’s stubborn grime, use a mild detergent mixed with water. Once a year, schedule a professional inspection and perform any maintenance as needed. An excellent time to schedule is in the fall, prior to the cold weather arriving.

Update Your Firmware and Software

Many modern EV chargers have firmware and software that the manufacturer continues to refine over time. Updating these systems can improve energy efficiency and charging speed and even add features in some cases. If your EV charger supports it, enable automatic software updates. Otherwise, check for updates at least once a month and install them accordingly.

Only Charge to 80% for Daily Use

While charging to 100% is an option, it shouldn’t be your daily approach. Plan your daily commute and errands around a battery that has a maximum 80% charge. This will avoid unnecessary degradation and help to extend the life of your battery. You can charge to 100% occasionally, such as ahead of a long road trip. When the vehicle will go unused for 48 hours or longer, target a charge level between 40% and 60%.

Charge Often Rather Than for Long Periods

Avoid excess heat and thus battery wear by topping the battery up to 80% frequently rather than waiting to charge for many hours at a time. Many commuters can charge for an hour or two every day and not have to worry about extended charging periods.

Use DC Fast Charging Sparingly

Frequent use of public DC fast charging can have a negative impact on your battery. Only use public stations when absolutely necessary, and plan around maximizing use of your home EV charger. If you know you’ll need to use DC fast charging, charge early, such as at 40%, rather than waiting for the battery to get to 20% or less.

Take Advantage of Off-Peak Rates

Many local power companies charge different rates based on the time of day. It’s often most expensive to charge your vehicle between the time you get home and go to bed. With features like remote access and scheduling, you can take advantage of the lowest rates, often after 10 p.m.
